Why Some Brother TD4 Ribbons Have Notches and Take-Up Cores

The Brother TD4 thermal transfer printer is designed to use ribbon cores with notches, which allow the ribbon to fit securely into the printer. Ribbons that are 4.33” (110mm) wide and include notches do not require the use of the Brother LBX113 TD4T RIBBON SPINDLE ADAPTER. However, if you are using ribbons that are shorter in width, such as 2.39” wide resin ribbons, or 4.33” ribbons without notches, you will need the adapter to hold the ribbon in place. Additionally, ribbons that list "Take-Up Core Included" come with a core for the used ribbon, which is rewound after printing. This ensures smooth operation and compatibility with the printer.

When Do You Need Take-Up Cores?

Take-Up cores are essential for rewinding used ribbon after printing. Ribbons that include a Take-Up core are labeled as such, but many bulk packs of 24 ribbons do not include notches or Take-Up cores, which helps reduce costs. In these cases, it’s a good practice to save the cores from your old ribbons to use as Take-Up cores when installing new ribbons.
